Compare Kitchen Cabinets Without Booking Six Appointments
Cabinets are the biggest cost in most kitchen budgets. They are also the hardest part to judge from a photo. A drawer either rolls all the way out and shuts soft, or it does not.
You can only judge that by hand. Do it at the Fort Lauderdale Home Show, September 4–7, 2026 at the Broward County Convention Center in Fort Lauderdale.
Three moves turn a lap of the floor into a real short list. Each one takes a minute at the booth.
Open a Drawer, Then Ask
Pull one all the way out. Do it at every booth. Your hands sort solid from flashy faster than any brochure.
Then ask what the box is made of. Doors sell you the kitchen. The box decides whether it survives our damp air.
Answers to listen for
Box material. You will hear plywood, furniture-grade particleboard or MDF. Then ask how thick it is.
Drawer box. Solid wood, with dovetail joints at the corners.
Slides. Good ones run out to full depth and shut soft. Undermount slides hide below the drawer, not on its sides.
Say What Annoys You
Bring the list of daily gripes. Most storage complaints are layout problems. A rep can only solve the ones you describe.
Point at a display and ask for it. The fixes are built out full size, a few steps away. Any of them beats a fancy door style.
Fixes worth asking about
Dead space. A blind corner nothing reaches, a filler panel doing no work, pots buried three shelves deep.
What fixes it. Deep drawer banks, a pull-out pantry tower, tray dividers, an appliance garage or a butler pantry.
Hand Every Booth One List
Write the job down once. Ask each booth to price that same list, so the numbers you carry home compare.
Ask what is not on the estimate. The cheapest bid is usually the one missing the most. Those gaps come back later as change orders.
What belongs on the list
The obvious. Tear-out and haul-away, then boxes and doors.
The trim. Finished end panels, crown and light rail, toe kick and fillers.
The forgotten. Hardware, soft-close upgrades, install labor, and lifting the countertop off and back on.

Talk to the Shop That Builds Them
Many of these booths are run by the shop that builds the cabinets. The same people cut the boxes, spray the finish and hang the doors.
They are not a franchise selling someone else’s catalog. Ask them the four questions that decide a job:
What to ask
Custom sizes. Can you build me a 42-inch drawer bank instead of base doors?
Finish matching. Can you match this stain on paint-grade maple?
Crooked walls. My walls are not plumb, which means they lean a little. Can you scribe the run to fit? To scribe is to trim the cabinet edge so it follows the wall.
Lead time. How many weeks is the wait right now?
Custom, semi-custom and refacing booths sit a few aisles apart. You can price the same kitchen all three ways in one afternoon.
Feel the hardware each one uses. You will see where the money goes: into drawer boxes, slides and finish. It rarely goes into the parts nobody opens.
You cannot feel a soft-close hinge through a screen. Open and shut fifty of them in an hour. Listen for the ones that clunk. Lean on a drawer front and watch for sag.
See Finishes Together
A door sample on a website is lit to look good. That color is not the color you get at home. Bring a countertop chip, a scrap of your flooring and a photo of your backsplash.
Hold all three against real doors under one light. Whites go warm or cold. A stain can read orange next to grey tile. Matte and satin look nothing alike.
Get Numbers the Same Day
All the cabinet shops sit in one room. That saves you four showroom visits and a week of callbacks. Take notes at the booth and leave with a short list.

Yes. It changes what a rep can tell you. A rough sketch is enough:
Wall lengths, ceiling height, window and door positions. The numbers that make a quote real.
Sink, range and refrigerator. Where the appliances sit drives the whole layout.
Phone photos of the room. They help as much as the sketch.
Without them you get ballpark numbers, not real ones.
Look at both in one afternoon. That is the single best reason to walk the floor.
Refacing keeps your boxes. You get new doors, drawer fronts and finish. The layout stays put.
Replacing frees the layout. Swap doors for deep drawers, or fix a dead corner.
Boxes solid, layout works? Reface, and you usually save money.
Moving the sink or a wall? New cabinets are the better spend.
